The two most frequently requested additions to Filmtracks by its readers are now available at the site.

First is the format of the audio samples attached to each review. Since 1996, these samples have existed only in Real Audio form, one that is now generally considered antiquated. The roughly 5,500 clips existing at Filmtracks have been converted into both WMA and MP3 formats, and all three options now exist for each clip in the reviews. Although the smallest in size, the Real Audio clips, and especially those encoded since 2005, still provide the best sound quality of the three. In the near future, new reviews at Filmtracks will only feature MP3-formatted clips, ensuring the maximum compatibility for its users. Because of practical and legal concerns, all clips are provided in 1-channel (mono) sound at a range of 44 Kbps to 64 Kbps, easily good enough to give the listener a decent idea of the nature of each score without being cumbersome in size.

The second new feature at Filmtracks is an RSS feed. Subscribers to this feed will receive notification of when new reviews, site updates, and special features are published at the site. The feed is generated automatically by the site, so you can be sure that it will reflect the exact moment new content debuts at Filmtracks. To copy the RSS link or learn more about it, read more: http://www.filmtracks.com/rss/

The next upgrade projects planned for Filmtracks, aside from a continuation of new reviews, include a rearranged Filmtracks Awards section, a new look for the internal search engine, and new career summaries of major composers in their tribute section. Also looming is a significant server upgrade in May.

Please let me know if you discover any problems with these new features, and also keep your suggestions for Filmtracks coming, too. The audio clips and RSS feed may have been the most wanted improvements, but there's always room for more. Thanks!

Christian
