Review and site status: first half of 2017   Sunday, July 16, 2017 (8:40 a.m.)

Remaining without a physical home since late 2015, Filmtracks continues to struggle to maintain normal operations while an office for the site is built in the Seattle region. As part of a home in the Southworth area across the Puget Sound from downtown Seattle, the 500 square-foot office has been designed to service Filmtracks for the foreseeable future.

Reinforcing the troubled reputation of every residential construction project, however, the building process has languished in the bidding, utilities, and permitting stage for much longer than expected. Despite my best efforts to expedite the design of the building and land development by completing much of the drafting work myself, it appears now that an office for Filmtracks will not be ready to occupy for at least another nine to ten months.

What does this all mean for Filmtracks? The site will continue to operate in a slower mode over the next year, striving to meet its diminished coverage goals and offering no new major features or upgrades to the site. Through the first half of 2017, there were 18 new reviews and 14 re-writes completed, putting the site roughly on target for its annual goals (35 and 30, respectively).

The quantity of re-writes, accounting for new albums released for scores already reviewed, has dropped significantly since last year. This decrease is largely because some of the more active specialty record labels have decided to stop supplying Filmtracks with their products and the site does not have the budget to purchase these items at retail price. If the labels are not interested in the coverage, then there are not many expeditious options that don't involve assistance from colleagues.

Fortunately, traffic levels and revenue continue to barely cover the site's basic costs. Participation on the Scoreboard Forum has declined somewhat, a result of some of the conversations between veteran regulars shifting to social media, but the board is still relatively healthy and attracts new participants each year despite its more colorful (and occasionally naked) members. More likely than not, we'll find ourselves in exactly the same situation at Filmtracks one year from now, when hopefully the site will be moving into its new, long-term office.
